Term1 TOD Day1: SMT Meeting as an Assistant Principal
Today I was able to see a different perspective as part of the senior management team. Compared to where I was last year (and for my past 10 years of teaching), I was fortunate to observe, listen and share points of view in new contexts below.
- School Charter Strategic Plan
- School Curriculum document
- ERO set up
- Master Plan for WIS building project (MOE)
- Teacher job descriptions
My New Responsibilities:
- AFL - Maths with Trish. Data analysis, teacher timetable
- Maths COLs
- Reading - alongside Simon & Taryn
- Options Programmes
How do you feel Michelle after TOD day1?
I feel ready and keen to get started. I'm excited to help facilitate Maths pd with Trisha, because I am part of the Maths Cols team this will be a great way for me to hopefully see growth in our school in Maths.
What challenges do you for-see?
AFL Data analysis for Maths with Trisha is going to be something new. Our interpretations of this with regard to why may not line up because of my knowledge of the teachers and students.
Some of the language and contexts we discussed I feel are a little over my head and don't really interest me but I know I need to be clued up and make the effort to research and learn about those contexts and have an opinion that will benefit our 'market' and our future. I will need to have a perspective and background knowledge about the politics of this job - this will be a challenge for me.
Not having my own class to start the year is quite daunting and strange. I miss prepping for my lovelies but I am keen to work in other teachers classes to support PB4L, routines and expectations this year. Another challenge that is also exciting is being in different classes to help support teachers and students will give insight but they challenge will convincing teachers of better/best teacher practises based on my experience. Others may see this role as invasive and may not see the buy in there for be less inclined to make suitable changes. This will challenge my approach to different teachers and their pedagogy. Overall I am definitely up for the challenges and for-see positive growth for teachers, students, our school and myself.
